The secure document sharing platform

Dropbox / DocSend

Software Engineer
May 2019—Nov 2024

I worked on the DocSend spaces team which led the development of our flagship VDR (virtual data room) product at Dropbox.

“Myk is one of those rare engineers who combines technical expertise with a deeply creative and user-centered approach. His ability to think big picture while keeping user needs top of mind consistently elevated our work and made him such an asset to the team."

I worked at DocSend which was eventually acquired by Dropbox where I continued to work until November 2024 when I was laid off in their 20% reduction in workforce. I was a fullstack product engineer on the spaces (VDR) team. Over my time in this role, we went from an engineering team of 15+ engineers to the overall 2,500+ employees at Dropbox. I learned a lot and improved as an engineer and teammate.

This section is where I will go over my background and some quick highlights during my time in this role.

My long-term career goal was working towards an Intrapreneur/Architect-type Staff Engineer role.

  • Worked on the spaces (VDR) team for 4+ years
  • Product engineer with strong UX and customer sense
  • Impact on internal processes and tooling like better analytics tools, design system management with Storybook
  • Continuous improvement with Munch&learn sessions or mentorship

Overall, I am known as the idea person with the expertise and craft to deliver those ideas. I am great at learning the nuances in various systems which helps me understand how to make improvements or changes as well as teaching others how they work.

Highlights & Impact

I care about creating a positive impact both on the product through the work I do but also with my team. Here are some highlights from my time in this role.

Projects

Pivotal role in 15+ features and projects

From co-leading the recent redesign of the spaces UI to supporting other major features like granular permissions and file requests, I was either project lead or helped the lead in identifying potential problem areas with things like tech debt, edge cases and more.

Process

Customer advocate

I worked closely with customer support and product managers to understand customer pain points and feedback. I led the DocSend participation in our internal CX week initiative as well as improving our insights with better customer reporting tools. I also helped with the setup and process around tools like Storybook to create better consistency in our UX at DocSend.

Culture

Mentorship & onboarding

Onboarded 8+ engineers and mentored 5+ engineers and product managers.

Culture

Moderated or hosted 20+ Munch&learns

Managed the schedule for our monthly Munch&learn sessions with topics ranging from API design to AI/ML. I also ran multiple one-off training sessions for specific topics for teams like system overviews.

Culture

Work life balance champion

I was a member of the on-call working group to improve processes and reduce on-call fatigue. I would also join my manager in reminding people to take time off if they need to reset.

Recognizing Myk's efforts to support our Customer partners in implementing a new support tool in DocSend and focusing on other stakeholder impact to also call out dependencies for deprecating the other service. Myk is quick to unblock the eng team via Peer Reviews and answering questions about our code base, and has enabled that team to meet their timelines.

Myk is one of the only engineers I've encountered that cares this much about team and company culture. He is really enthusiastic about creating a supportive team culture and helping people expand their skillsets. He is always dependable and produces well though-out code. I am always happy when I look at one of his PRs. He takes feedback well and is always interested in the best solution.

Myk owns his work and beyond, often being the first to respond to incidents and are fast with results often being the first with a solution. He has lots of bold ideas and is good at sharing what he has learned. He asks for feedback and accepts it thoughtfully.

He is very good at keeping the team engaged, included and in sync, often providing summaries in chat of conversations that happen in zoom meetings. Overall, he is a great teammate. He produces high quality work and have a deep understanding of the systems he maintains.

Myk is someone who takes care of the work he does and makes sure it works correctly or works in the fix and feedback if needed. His involvement with multiple teams and parts of the whole product is something I wish to achieve soon

Myk is one of the most welcoming and encouraging people in our team. Whenever someone new starts, he is the first one to say hi, schedule a welcome meeting. He is also always there when someone needs help with their work. This helps us have a better team culture where people can trust each other.

Myk is probably one of the most involved engineers in product direction. He gets excited about making the product better, tries to inspire others, doesn't shy away from writing a document and sharing it with others. An example is Space customization where he came up with many great ideas about how Spaces could look better. Another thing I appreciate about him is that he doesn't want just his ideas to win, he wants the best idea to win. When he is convinced on an idea, he can easily get behind it and push to make it happen.
